Week 9 Discussion – Why Revise? Attachment

“But I Thought It Was Good Enough. Why Revise?”Please respond to the following:

Select one of the quotes provided here and discuss what you think the writer is trying to convey about writing and editing. Then, describe the challenges you have had and the benefits you have experienced with revising and polishing your written work.

  • “The time to begin writing an article is when you have finished it to your satisfaction. By that time you begin to clearly and logically perceive what it is you really want to say.” ~Mark Twain

  • “The writer must learn to read critically but constructively, to cut what is bad to reveal what is good. Eleanor Estes, the children’s book author, explains: ‘The writer must survey his work critically, coolly, as though he were a stranger to it. He must be willing to prune, expertly and hard-heartedly.’” ~ Donald M. Murray

  • “You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.” ~Arthur Polotnik

Hello Class,

“You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. And we edit to let the fire show through the smoke.” ~Arthur Polotnik

I think what Arthur Polotnik is trying to say when we write a story or essay is that we should write about something that we believe in. Once we have chosen a subject that we feel strongly about, the author can put their thoughts on paper. Once this is done, editing is crucial. If we really want to get our point across clearly, we need to make sure to go back to our paper and revise as needed. We want the reader to understand exactly what we are trying explain or discuss when we write.

Arthur was trying to convey that writing should come form your heart and what you are passionate about. The smoke could be your drafts and then we edit the smoke to show the fire, to show what is burning in your heart . If your making a fire generally smoke comes first ( depending on what kind of fire you are making )  and then the fire . The fire is your final draft /paper . It’s the fire that has been within you heart and mind ,and is now on paper .
